About

Kate Coleman is an eye surgeon and qualified as a doctor after six years at the multinational Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Following graduation and internship, Kate spent a year in University College Dublin completing a BSc(Hons) in Physiology, specialising in electrophysiology of the eye in Carotid Artery disease. She commenced Ophthalmology in January 1988 and by January 1990 had both her Fellowships in Surgery (FRCSEd) and Ophthalmology (FRCOphth). She then went to Amsterdam to specialise in Orbital and Oculoplastic surgery, under the guidance of the late renowned Professor Leo Koornneef, at the Academisch Medisch Center of the University of Amsterdam. She became a staff member there in August 1990. Whilst there, she commenced a PhD in Quantitative Pathology of Uveal Melanoma, with Professor Jan Baak, at the Free University, Amsterdam and completed it with Professor Mary Leader in the Department of Pathology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. READ MORE>>>

Eyelid Problems

BOTOX/DYSPORT INJECTIONS FOR BLEPHAROSPASM Botulinum toxin has been used by ophthalmologists since 1973 as a treatment for patients with crossed eyes (squints) and for severe facial spasm. It inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the joining site of the nerve to the muscle, so that the muscle never gets a chance to contract. By weakening the overactive eye muscles, BOTOX/DYSPORT provides an alternative to surgery. READ MORE>>>

BOTOX FOR WRINKLE MANAGEMENT Botulinum toxin (BTX) is used extensively medically and even surgically. This clinic provides BTX to treat conditions called Blepharospasm, facial dystonia, Meigs Syndrome and we offer injections of BTX for medical indications. Dr Kate also runs a clinic in Suite 22 for Facial Palsy patients, to offer BTX, fillers and (sometimes) eye lid surgery to ‘balance’ their faces, create symmetry and restore their confidence. READ MORE>>>

BLEPHARITIS Blepharitis simply means ‘inflammation of the eyelids’. There are several different causes but the most common type, known as seborrhoeic blepharitis, occurs for no known reason. This can even start in childhood. READ MORE>>>

DRY EYES Some people do not produce enough tears to keep the eye comfortable. This is known as dry eye. Tears are produced by two different methods. One method produces tears at a slow, steady rate and is responsible for normal lubrication. The other method produces large quantities of tears in response to eye irritation or emotions.READ MORE>>>

EYE REJUVENATION As we age, our skin loses its elasticity and our muscles tend to slacken. The skin around the eyes is very fine and tends to sag with time. This extra skin may even lie on the eyelashes and hang over the lid margins affecting vision and causing discomfort around the eye. Prolonged stress and lack of sleep can aggravate these changes.READ MORE>>>

PTOSIS The most obvious sign of ptosis is the drooping lid itself. Ptosis can affect one or both eyelids. It may be present at birth or occur later in life. In congenital ptosis, the upper eyelid creases may be uneven with one another. You may notice your child often tipping his or her head back to see underneath the drooping eyelid. He or she may try to lift the eyelids by raising his or her eyebrows. READ MORE>>>
